How to Cut a Hockey Stick Without Regretting It

ICEFORGE ELITE hockey stick shaft and blade

Measure your stick, mark it with tape, then cut less than you think you need using a fine-tooth saw. You can always take more off. You cannot put it back. Each inch you cut also makes the stick stiffer, by about 3–5 flex according to HockeyMonkey and Scheels.

What you need

  • Tape and a tape measure
  • A fine-tooth saw
  • Fine sandpaper
  • Dust mask and eye protection
  • Stick tape or a new butt end

Step by step

  1. Find your length. A common guide is the top of the stick at about your nose in shoes, or between your chin and lower lip on skates. Many players go shorter or longer to suit their game.
  2. Compare with your current stick. Measure both from the same points: top of the shaft to the heel, and top of the shaft to the toe.
  3. Mark it. Put tape at the length you want, and check it again on your body before you cut.
  4. Remove the butt end if the stick has one.
  5. Cut outside if you can. Wear your mask and eye protection, because cutting carbon makes fine dust. Hold the stick steady and cut straight, a little longer than your mark.
  6. Sand the edge lightly so the cut is smooth.
  7. Finish the top with tape or a new butt end, then play it before you take off any more.

How much stiffer will it get?

Printed flex Cut 1 in Cut 2 in Cut 3 in
75 About 78–80 About 81–85 About 84–90
85 About 88–90 About 91–95 About 94–100

These are estimates from the 3–5 flex rule of thumb, not measurements of a specific stick. If you plan a big cut, consider a softer flex. See our hockey stick flex chart.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Cutting all at once. Take off a little, play, then decide.
  • Measuring only on skates or only in shoes. Pick one way and compare the same way.
  • Comparing different points. A heel measurement and a toe measurement give different numbers on the same stick.
  • Cutting before you are sure about the stick. A cut stick usually cannot be returned. Check the terms first.

Common questions

Does cutting a hockey stick void the warranty?

It depends on the brand, so check before you cut. On ICEFORGE sticks, cutting the top to length does not end our 30-day breakage warranty, but a cut stick cannot be returned under our standard return terms. See our Refund policy.

Can I add length back after cutting?

An extension adds length back, along with a joint and some weight at the top of the shaft. It is better to cut a little at a time.

Do I have to cut my stick?

No. Some players of every height simply like a long stick. Play it uncut first if you are not sure.
