Senior hockey sticks usually run about 59 to 63 inches before cutting. Exact figures differ by brand and retailer, so measure the points you are comparing. The right length for you depends on your height, position and how you like to play.
| Stick size | Typical uncut length |
|---|---|
| Junior | About 49–52 inches |
| Intermediate | About 57–58 inches |
| Senior | About 59–63 inches |
These are typical ranges from retailer guides, such as Scheels and Monkey Sports. They are not a fixed standard.
The quick length check
A common guide: wearing shoes, the top of the stick reaches about your nose. On skates, it reaches between your chin and lower lip. Many players go shorter or longer to suit their game, so treat this as a starting point.
Position matters
Defensemen often play a longer stick for reach, poke checks and passing lanes. Forwards often play a shorter stick for puck control. Two players of the same height can reasonably choose different lengths.
Compare the same points
Brands measure in different ways. Before you compare two sticks, measure both from the same points: top of the shaft to the heel, and top of the shaft to the toe.
Tall players: extension or cut?
If you are tall and your stick feels short, measure it before you buy something new. An extension adds length, a joint and some weight at the top of the shaft. Cutting a stick works the other way: it makes the stick shorter and stiffer, so cut a little at a time.
Common questions
How long is a senior hockey stick?
Usually about 59 to 63 inches before cutting. Check how the brand measures, because a heel measurement and a toe measurement give different numbers on the same stick.
How tall should a hockey stick be on you?
A common starting point is about your nose in shoes, or between your chin and lower lip on skates.
Does cutting a hockey stick change the flex?
Yes. A shorter stick feels stiffer, so cut a little at a time and allow for it when you choose a flex. Our stick guide shows how to cut one.
