What Length Hockey Stick Do You Need If You're 6'0" or Taller?

Most senior hockey sticks are made around 60–62 inches. If you are tall, that often means a stick that feels short, or a stick with an extension added. Here is how to check your length and decide if you need more.

The quick length check

Stand in your skates with the tip of the stick on the ice and the stick upright in front of you. The top of the stick should reach somewhere between your chin and your nose. If the top of the shaft is at your chest or lower, the stick is too short for you.

Position matters

Defensemen usually play with a longer stick for reach, poke checks and passing lanes. Forwards usually play with a shorter stick for puck control. That is why the same height can call for different lengths.

Position Height for a 67" stick
Defenseman 6'0" – 6'5"
Forward 6'2" – 6'5"

These ranges are guidance from a hockey coach, not a rule. Your style, skates and preferred stance matter as well.

Extension or a full-length stick?

An extension adds a joint and extra weight at the butt end of the shaft. A stick built at full length has one continuous shaft, so there is no joint and nothing added to the finished weight.
